A critical assessment of the analysis and distributions of scytonemin and related UV screening pigments in sediments

first_imgHigh performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry has been used to identify the cyanophyta-derived ultraviolet screening pigment scytonemin and its reduced counterpart in an Antarctic lake sediment. The formation of an artefact during the analysis has been demonstrated, enabling the recovery of improved estimates of the scytonemin and reduced scytonemin signals. The overall pigment composition records a primary producer community comprising both oxygenic and anoxygenic photoautotrophs, with variations in the abundance of scytonemin relative to the chlorophylls and carotenoids that are consistent with changes in response to variations in the light regime over time.last_img

Yemen gov’t says willing to work with Biden to end Saudi war

first_imgSANAA, Yemen (AP) — Yemen’s foreign minister says his government will work with President Joe Biden’s administration to end the war in Yemen. Still, the minister said Yemen’s Houthi rebels and their Iranian backers remain the main obstacle to peace. That’s an apparent defense of the Saudi military involvement in Yemen. He spoke to The Associated Press late Thursday. Hours earlier, Biden announced the U.S. was ending support for a yearslong Saudi-led military offensive in Yemen. The war in the Arab world’s poorest country has killed some 130,000 people and resulted in the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.last_img
