Refreshments served afterwards.Cathaoirleach Cllr. Seamus O’Domhnaill is delighted with the response to this year’s Big Donegal Clean-up.Bags of rubbish collected following community clean up on Arranmore Island last weekend. He said “It never ceases to amaze me the sense of community we have here in Donegal and this response simply reinforces this for me. There is no way that the Council would have the resources to keep every road and public area in the county clean, and that’s why the work that these people do is so important.“These people are our unsung heroes and are the backbone of our communities and they should be highly commended for all the work they do. While this work is very important from a tourism perspective, it is about more than that. It is about caring for our own environment and about the pride we have in our own communities and I would ask our illegal dumpers and litter bugs to take a minute and think about the effort these people are making.“Every piece of litter that is thrown out of a car window must be lifted by someone, every bag of rubbish that is dumped illegally must be collected by someone. I would ask you to think again. Your reckless action is endangering natural habitats and creating an unsightly mess that reflects badly on everyone in the community.” Get involvedAnyone who would like to take part in any of the clean-ups mentioned can find more information on times and meeting points at bit.ly/DonegalCleanUp.There is still plenty of time to take part in the Big Donegal Clean Up by organising a clean-up in your own area. All you have to do is call the Council on 074 91 53900 or call into to any Council office to register. Donegal County Council provides bags, pickers and high vis vests and then collects the rubbish from designated points at agreed times.Bags of rubbish collect at Clar BeachHundreds out and about this weekend as part of Big Donegal Clean Up was last modified: April 4th, 2019 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:Big Clean-updonegallast_img read more

SA’s first grid-connected solar PV plant

first_img16 September 2013 Norway-based Scatec Solar announced on Monday that it had completed its 75-megawatt solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant in Kalkbult in the Northern Cape three months ahead of schedule, making it first project under South Africa’s renewable energy programme for private producers to be grid connected and operational. Scatec Solar was one of 28 independent power producers that signed contracts with the government late last year, in the first round of a programme that will see an initial 1 400 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy being added to South Africa’s energy mix, while bringing an estimated R47-billion in new investment into the country. The Department of Energy aims to bring 17 800 MW from renewable sources online by 2030. Scatec Solar has been awarded three projects with total capacity of 190 MW under the government’s programme. Construction of its next two projects, located in the Northern and Eastern Cape, has started and completion is expected by the middle of next year. The completed Kalkbult plant consists of more than 312 000 solar panels mounted on 156 kilometres of substructure, inverters, transformers and a sub-station. Kalkbult’s electricity will be sold to state company Eskom through a 20-year purchase agreement. According to Scatec Solar, the annual production of 135-million kWh will cover the electricity demand of 33 000 households, while reducing the country’s carbon dioxide emissions by almost 115 000 tons per year. “The South African authorities are committed to implementing an ambitious renewable energy programme, and we find great satisfaction in being able to contribute to its success through our own projects, which we have actively been developing in South Africa over the last four years,” Scatec Solar CEO Raymond Carlsen said in a statement on Monday. “This country boasts some of the best conditions for solar power in the world, and the annual output of 135-million kWh produced at the Kalkbult plant will benefit both the region and the local community in which we operate.” SAinfo reporterlast_img read more
