Dell EMC PowerEdge Tops Big Data Analysis Systems Benchmark

first_imgConclusionEver since the release of the TPCx-Big Bench benchmark standard in December 2015, Dell EMC has been an active member of the TPCx-Big Bench Technical Committee and will continue to collaborate with other stakeholders within the industry to maintain the TPCx-BB specification.Dell EMC uses the TPCx-BB workloads to compare and differentiate its data analytics solutions and will additionally use them for performance characterizations and optimizations for the benefit of its customers.Industry standard computer benchmarking should not be viewed as a purely academic exercise or a competition among vendors.  Studying the design of top performing systems has significant benefits for customers that now, with the industry collaboration on the TPCx-BB benchmark, can advance the state of the art of performance engineering for Data Analytics. Power Test18,949.43s Detailed results and documentation are available at the TPC website.Competitive LandscapeThe TPCx-BB benchmark standard has published results on SF1000, 3000, 10000 and 30000. Dell EMC has one SF10000 published result submitted in May, 2017 based on 13G hardware (Intel Xeon Broadwell based processors). As of April 04, 2018, only Dell EMC and HPE have published results at SF10000 based on servers with Intel Xeon Skylake processors. The published results for SF3000 and 1000 from HPE and Huawei are based on Intel Broadwell and Haswell family of processors. The only result the Dell EMC 14G performance data can realistically be compared to is the latest HPE SF10000 result: Total System Cost$908,125 Throughput Test70,134.07s Performance Metric1,660.75 [email protected]center_img Price/Performance546.82 $/[email protected] Dell EMC Re-takes Performance Lead on TPCx-Big Bench Benchmark at Scale Factor 10000 Using 14G Hardware PlatformComputer benchmarking is the practice of discovering, measuring and assessing the relative performance of a system for a specific workload. Industry standard benchmarks allow researchers to compare the best performance being achieved by their systems to those of another entity (competitor) or to an entirely different industry. This information can then be used to identify gaps in an organization’s performance processes to achieve a competitive advantage. It is also used to compare the performance of the various vendor offerings within the Industry.Dell EMC uses industry-standard benchmark tests to provide objective and verifiable performance data to its customers as it relates to its hardware platforms and solutions. Customers can use this data when designing and sizing a solution to deliver optimal performance for their business use cases and to scale as needed. As big data analysis systems (BDAS) mature, the pressure to evaluate and compare both the performance and the price performance of these systems rises. To address this, the Transaction Processing Performance Council (TPC) developed the TPCx-Big Bench (TPCx-BB), a benchmark standard for comparing BDAS solutions. Detailed information about the TPCx-BB specification can be found at http://www.tpc.org/tpcx-bb/default.asp.On March 22, 2018, Dell EMC published a SF10000 TPCx-BB benchmark result that occupies the number 1 position for both the Performance and Price/Performance tables on the TPC website. With this result, and as at that date, Dell EMC topped the Performance and Price/Performance tables of the TPCx-BB benchmark at SF10000. This is the 2nd result from Dell EMC following the pioneering result it published in the summer of 2017. There are two other results published at SF10000, both from HPE as shown on this page http://www.tpc.org/tpcx-bb/results/tpcxbb_perf_results.asp.System Under TestFor this submission, the System Under Test (SUT) comprised 1 x DELL EMC PowerEdge R640 Server (Master node) and 18 x Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd Servers (Slave nodes) as depicted in the System Configuration diagram below:What was tested and measured? The benchmark is designed to stress the CPU and IO systems of a Big Data Cluster using a single stream (power test) and concurrent streams (throughput test) of 30 queries (workloads).  Each run is performed under 3 phases: Load, Power and Throughput. For the test to pass an audit, 2 sequential performance runs must be executed.ResultsThe overall TPCx-BB performance data for the Dell EMC R640/R740xd configuration is summarized in the table below: Availability DateMarch 20, 2018 Load Test2,190.66slast_img read more

Intel’s 9th Gen K-Series CPU Added to the New XPS Tower Special Edition and Alienware Aurora.

first_imgRoughly five years ago we began planning the Alienware Aurora and the XPS Tower. While working with many teams in many regions, we always knew that we’d have to offer the latest performance. As has been the history of Alienware and XPS, performance is paramount to the brands success and is the first feature customers expect.Fast forward to 2017. In only October of last year both the Alienware Aurora and XPS Tower were updated to Intel’s 8th Gen 6-Core CPUs. Prior, both Alienware and XPS had been running Intel’s four core processors for well on a decade – so the launch of 6-core was especially welcomed by us and our customers. Now – a mere 12 months later, we are already moving to new 9th Generation 8-core K-Series (i5, i7, i9) just in time for the holidays. The Alienware Aurora was designed for gamers who crave a beyond “stock” experience. When these new processors are paired with the Aurora’s advanced liquid cooling solution, purpose built thermally advantaged chassis and the latest graphics cards it will allow gamers the ultimate gaming experience whether it be in 4K, VR, or in the latest esports titles.  For those seeking a more subtle yet sophisticated performance based PC, the XPS Tower Special Edition continues to offer customers the latest and best performance with full customer accessible expandability. Both take full advantage of Intel’s 9th Gen K-Series to make them the premium, high-performance desktops for this Holiday season. The XPS Tower Special Edition will be available in the U.S. and China on October 29, U.S. pricing starting at $1099 USD, and the Alienware Aurora will be available globally within the coming month, starting at $899 USD, direct from Alienware.com and in retail stores. Please note, regional availability and configurations will vary. Also launching with the Alienware Aurora is the latest advancement in software personalization and command/control from Alienware – the New Alienware Command Center. First launched on the new Alienware Area-51 in January, Alienware’s Command Center give a customer complete control over their system lighting – including managing Alienware’s keyboards, mice and headphone, access to the Alienware Aurora’s advanced overclocking tools (in addition to more cores, Intel has added a new Solder Thermal Interface Material (STIM) that gives incredible overclockability) that provides a simple interface for a quick fix – or get deep into the clocks and voltages, and perhaps the most powerful feature for customers is the Game Library. This feature allows customers to customize their system lighting, performance, acoustics on a game by game basis to give complete control over their gaming world. For developers and creatives, it’s all about performance, and the Intel 9th Gen is supercharged for creating, faster video editing and easy sharing using today’s top tools. Intel Quick Sync Video provides hardware acceleration for the latest video codecs, and Intel Optane memory intuitively learns what applications you use most and loads your most-used apps and tools faster. These customers will love the speed introduced with this new set of processors as their render times will be better than ever. So, do you game? Want to begin the next generation of VR entertainment or edit home videos? Or just want the latest performance available that will keep your computing needs current for the coming years, the new Alienware Aurora and XPS Tower Special Edition are ready for you.last_img read more

Tentative start to Turkey-Greece talks after year of strife

first_imgANKARA, Turkey (AP) — The first high-level talks aimed at reducing tensions between Turkey and Greece in five years have taken place behind closed doors. Monday’s exploratory talks at Istanbul’s Dolmabahce Palace came after a year that saw the two NATO members come to the verge of conflict in the eastern Mediterranean. That crisis pushed the European Union toward imposing sanctions on Ankara. A spokesman for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed Turkey’s commitment to “regional peace and stability” but Athens was more reserved. Greece’s government spokesman said “these are not negotiations and do not have a binding effect.”last_img

Yemen gov’t says willing to work with Biden to end Saudi war

first_imgSANAA, Yemen (AP) — Yemen’s foreign minister says his government will work with President Joe Biden’s administration to end the war in Yemen. Still, the minister said Yemen’s Houthi rebels and their Iranian backers remain the main obstacle to peace. That’s an apparent defense of the Saudi military involvement in Yemen. He spoke to The Associated Press late Thursday. Hours earlier, Biden announced the U.S. was ending support for a yearslong Saudi-led military offensive in Yemen. The war in the Arab world’s poorest country has killed some 130,000 people and resulted in the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.last_img
