The attacker or attackers kicked or hit the baby girl in the face. “She was left for dead,” Handfield said. “If she would have been here any longer, she could have perished from lack of food and water.” Investigators did not know the motive for the attack, and no arrests had been made. Authorities did not release the type of weapon used in the attack but they ruled out murder-suicide. There were no signs of forced entry. Evidence at the scene suggested the killings were not random and that the family knew whoever did it, Handfield said. The three dead were found upstairs. The boy was killed in his bedroom. Handfield did not know where the baby was found. GARDEN GROVE – A 1-year-old girl, beaten and dehydrated, spent as many as three days alone in a house with the bodies of her slain family, police said Tuesday. The baby girl was found late Monday when police, conducting a welfare check at the family’s home, discovered the grisly scene – the bodies of a man in his 30s, a woman in her late 20s and a 7-year-old boy. “This is a very violent scene,” said Lt. Mike Handfield. “It’s one of the worst cases we’ve seen here in Garden Grove.” Police did not immediately release the identities of the family. Autopsies were pending and detectives were still trying to notify next of kin. “This was more personal than a random act,” he said. Handfield said the evidence also indicated the attacker or attackers “did not run in and run out” and spent some time in the residence before leaving. The family lived on a street lined with two-story, stucco homes in Garden Grove, about 35 miles southeast of Los Angeles in Orange County. The slain woman worked for a casino in San Bernardino. When she did not show up for work on Saturday, co-workers became concerned. Some friends stopped by the house at one point, but did not see anything amiss and assumed the family was away, Handfield said. The slain man had a history of arrests on nonviolent charges and had once spent time in prison. Handfield declined to elaborate, adding investigators were unsure whether the man’s past had anything to do with the homicides.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
