Men’s Basketball Takes 3-Game Win Streak Into Final Week of MVC Play

first_img Live Video Live Audio The Drake University men’s basketball team heads to Illinois State Wednesday evening with a three-game win streak in tow to begin the final week of Missouri Valley Conference action. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Redbird Arena on The Valley on ESPN3.Drake makes the annual trip to Normal, Ill., in search of a season sweep of the Redbirds after an 87-62 victory in the first meeting this season in the Knapp Center. Reigning MVC Player of the Week Reed Timmer (New Berlin, Wis.) scored 28 points in that game and is coming off a week in which he scored 59 points to earn league honors. In the Bulldogs’ last game, he scored 20 points and hit the game-winning three-pointer to push Drake past Missouri State, 67-63, and earn a season sweep of the Bears. That victory improved Drake to 10-6 in the MVC standings and guaranteed the Bulldogs no worse than a fourth-place finish in the final league standings. The 10 wins are the team’s most since 2007-08 and mark just the 11th time in program history the team has recorded 10 or more league wins. Milik Yarbrough, the current MVC Newcomer of the Week, leads the Redbirds with 16.8 points per game on 45.5 percent shooting with 6.4 rebounds per game. Following Wednesday’s game, Drake returns to the Knapp Center to close the regular season Saturday afternoon against MVC newcomer Valparaiso.
